Having graduated from Clare College, Cambridge with a degree in music, Daniel has gone on to work extensively in many musical fields. His first instrument is piano, on which he is equally experienced in jazz, classical and pop performance. He also plays folk violin, a bit of tabla and works as a professional singer. Having begun under Prof. Dharambir Singh, he is now studying Hindustani classical singing with Dr. Vijay Rajput. Daniel teaches South Asian and western music at Parkinson Lane School, Halifax, where he has founded a ground-breaking and national award-winning choir singing South Asian and Islamic music. He often gives workshops to teachers and to children about composition, multicultural music making and on the links between Christian and Islamic song.
Daniel has been commissioned to compose music for many different communities and has written two operas – The Forest (Hebden Bridge Arts Festival 2003) and Out of the Heart of the Star (Ted Hughes Festival 2008).
As well as performing with the band Sentimentalists, he has given some highly acclaimed duo performances with tabla player, Shahbaz Hussain.
