Artist - Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE

Dharambir is a Musician, Visionary, Educationalist and Entrepreneur extraordinaire, who has dedicated his life to music (Indian Classical), ensuring that it has a place in British Cultural Life. Since he moved to the UK he has continually been harnessing the power of music to empower as many people as possible in his local community including children, young people, adults and families. He has always been proactive in creating a space for inter-cultural dialogue through Music and plays an active role in the creation of new music that ranges from, Indo-Jazz, Indo-African, Indo-Cuban, Hindustani to Carnatic. It is in Dharambir’s very nature to be continually researching and looking for pioneering ways in which to make classical music more accessible to everyone, ensuring that it is visual, vibrant and appreciated in the mainstream, making it an integral part of the British Cultural landscape.

The brilliant and visionary ideas that Dharambir introduces to others, flow so naturally and tirelessly from him that he never expects any recognition or reward – it simply does not pass his mind – instead, he is continually humble and full of integrity; it is this part of his very nature that makes him worthy of recognition. As a very active musician he has performed widely in major festivals in England, Spain, Germany, Italy, Canada and USA. He has also worked extensively with the Euro Asian Fusion group Shiva Nova. Not only is Dharambir Singh one of the most prominent North Indian Classical musicians based in U.K., as he studied Sitar under the late maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan, he is also a great academic scholar and educationalist. Dharambir Singh studied for his MA at the School Of Oriental and African studies at the University of London and his reputation as an educator is unparalleled in England. He started teaching for the Leicester Music service in 1983. He held a post as Lecturer at the Leeds College of Music from 1991 to 2005 and at that time he was the only Indian musician to hold such a post in the UK.

In 2011, Ustad Dharambir Singh was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to the community through his excellence and promotion of Indian classical music.
