Artist - Ustad Harbhajan Singh

Ustad Harbhajan Singh was inspired to take up music at an early age by Satguru Jagjit Singh.  His vocal training in Hindustani classical music started with Mahadev Parsad Kathak.

In 1967, he became a disciple of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan who introduced him to a style of sitar playing adopted by the great Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan.  Harbhajan Singh ji is a gifted teacher specialising in Gurbani Sangeet, Sitar, Dilruba and Asa Di Var.

He welcomes any opportunities to share and impart the art of music through concerts, workshops and recordings throughout the UK.

SAA-uk is thrilled to announce that in 2011, Ustād Harbhajan Singh Namdhari, 66, is in receipt of a top Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.  Harbhajan is one of the top exponents of Gurbani Kirtan and has been recognised by the immense contribution he has made in this field.

His achievement represents a trend of late that has seen the Akademi recognising those un-acclaimed artistes also who have been working quietly for the promotion and continuance of their respective arts. Bhai Baldeep Singh, Executive Board member of the Sangeet Natak Akademi has been rooting for such accomplished but unrecognized names.

While he had the privilege of training under Ustād Tara Singh, Bir Singh Namdhari and Pandit Mahadev Prasad which was followed by eight years of training by sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustād Harbhajan Singh has been focusing on propagating rare compositions from his musical repertoire that comprise rare Gurbani Kirtan and dhrupad-dhamar compositions. He has also emerged as an accomplished composer.
