Jayasree Sen Gupta was a highly talented vocalist specialising in the North Indian Classical & Semi-Classical vocal genres of Khayal, Thumri, Ghazal and other lighter styles. She trained from the tender age of 4 under the guidance the music maestro couple Pandit A.T. Kanan and Mrs Malabika Kanan. She was awarded National Scholarship for a period of 10 years by the Govt.of India.Her Guru-ji passed away in 2004 and continued her musical development under the renowned Classical vocalist and educationist Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty.
Jayasree was also a highly skilled ghazal singer. She trained with the ghazal maestro Ustad Ghulam Ali, for eight years.
Jayasree had been a regular Grade A artist of the All India Radio, Calcutta since 1987. She has travelled to different corners of India, South-East Asia, UK and Europe to present famed stage performances. She toured France in October 2007 to present some prestigious performances including La Radio France concert and others. Jayasree has several audio releases in India to her credit and has featured on various radio & television channels in India & UK.
In addition to the above achievements she received an M.A. in English from the University of Calcutta and a B.A.Diploma in French Language & Literature.
In April 2010, Jayasree sadly passed away. 'Remembering Jayasree' - A concert in memory of Jayasree Sen Gupta took place at Seven Arts, Leeds on 14th July 2010. Organised by Jayasree's student Keertan Rehal, with the support of SAA-uk, all proceeds of this event were donated to the Cancer Unit at St. James' Hospital, Leeds.
