Taking place in heart of Leeds for the 4th year in a row, SAA-uk’s Summer Solstice Festival was an unforgettable experience where Internationally acclaimed artists of Indian classical music gathered to share music of the mind, body and soul, deeply imbedded in Rāgs of the sunset, night, dawn and sunrise.
Achuthan Sripathmanathan kickstarted an epic evening with his Carnatic violin, closely followed by the powerful and sacred vocal of Deepa Nair Rasiya and company. The midnight hour was greeted by a tabla solo of immense power and control from the hands of Sanju Sahai accompanied by Kirpal Singh, before the small hours of the morning were lit up by the Sitar of Mehboob Nadeem. The audience were gifted their own dawn chorus in the form of Rakesh Chaurasia and his mercurial bansuri framed by the tabla of Bhupinder Singh Chaggar, in what was a fitting conclusion to the new day.
It was a memorable and fitting welcome to the summer season enjoyed by over 120 people, who now can't wait for 2016!
