As the sun sinks lower in the sky on the longest day of summer, giving way to a warm velvety night, we welcome you to join us for SAA UK’s annual Summer Solstice set in the transformed surroundings of the Howard Assembly Room.
The first slice of the evening is an interactive conversation with leading experts Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE and Professor Martin Clayton. This is an opportunity to explore the intricacies of Indian Classical Music through the ‘The Art of Listening’. A must for anyone interested in knowing more about the rich heritage of this ancient musical tradition.
Next, we invite you to sit back and savour the trancelike melodies of the Vichitra Veena’s plucked strings. The ‘Vichitra’, meaning unusual or peculiar, opens this evening with its unique majestic tones, textures and timbre. Vijay Venkat’s artistry will explore this beautiful instrument; one so rarely heard in Yorkshire accompanied by Pirashanna Thevarajah on mridangam.
Finally, soak up the soulful summer evening ragas and bask in the peaceful aura of heart stringing sitar and spellbinding rhythm. UK’s most eminent female Sitarist Roopa Panesar will leave you thoroughly immersed in the soothing melodies of a mid-summer’s night, encapsulated in rhythm by Shahbaz Hussain on tabla.
